Frequently asked questions
Quick answers about our Portable Small GPS tracker, battery life, batteries, waterproof housing, tracking intervals, offline storage and subscription requirements.
What is the Portable Small GPS tracker best suited for?
The Portable Small GPS tracker is suited to assets, trailers, equipment, vehicles and other items where a compact battery powered tracker is preferred.
It is a good option when you want flexible placement without wiring the tracker into a vehicle or asset. If longer battery life is more important for your setup, our Portable Large tracker may be the better option.
Is your Portable Small GPS Tracker RCM certified?
Yes. Our Portable Small GPS Tracker is RCM certified.
This means it complies with the relevant Australian regulatory requirements for this type of device.
Does the Portable Small tracker need installation?
No wiring is required. The Portable Small tracker is battery powered, so it can be placed or mounted without connecting to vehicle power.
Final placement should still consider GPS reception, mobile signal, temperature, exposure and how securely the tracker is mounted.
What batteries does the Portable Small tracker use?
The Portable Small tracker uses 3 AAA lithium batteries.
Batteries are not included. We recommend Energizer Lithium batteries for maximum performance.
How long does the battery last?
Battery life depends heavily on tracking intervals, network coverage, temperature, installation position, orientation, accelerometer settings and other factors.
As a guide, periodic tracking can provide up to 10 years at 1 update per day, around 5 years at 4 updates per day, or around 5 months at 2 updates per hour.
For trip based tracking, estimates include approximately 5.5 years for a 15 minute trip 5 days per week, 3.4 years for a 30 minute trip 5 days per week, or 1.4 years for a 1 hour trip 7 days per week.
For applications where longer battery life is the priority, our Portable Large tracker has approximately double the battery life of the Portable Small tracker.
Can tracking intervals be customised?
Yes. Tracking intervals can be adjusted depending on how often you need location updates and how much battery life you want to preserve.
The default setup uses accelerometer wake, with GPS logging every 120 seconds, server updates every 180 seconds and a 12 hour heartbeat after no movement has been detected.
Other tracking modes are also available, including trip based GPS movement detection, periodic updates and scheduled updates. These can suit different use cases where movement detection, battery life or set daily upload times are more important.
You can request changes through our portable interval change form.
Is the Portable Small tracker waterproof?
Yes. The Portable Small tracker has an IP68 housing for water and dust resistance.
It also has an IK06 impact resistant housing, making it suitable for external mounting in many environments.
Will I receive low battery alerts?
Yes. The Portable Small tracker supports continuous voltage monitoring with low and critical battery alerts.
This helps provide warning before batteries need to be replaced.
Does it support temperature monitoring?
Yes. The tracker supports approximate device temperature updates and can be used with custom device temperature alerts.
Its operating temperature range is listed as -30°C to +60°C.
What network does the Portable Small tracker use?
The Portable Small tracker uses Telstra 4G LTE-M and NB-IoT connectivity.
These technologies are designed to support enhanced coverage in hard to reach areas and evolving cellular networks.
What happens outside mobile coverage?
The Portable Small tracker includes internal memory for offline tracking.
Location records can be stored when the tracker is outside network coverage and uploaded automatically once it reconnects.
How big is the Portable Small tracker?
The Portable Small tracker measures 84.2 x 62.5 x 23.6 mm and weighs approximately 80g.
It uses internal antennas with GPS, GLONASS, GALILEO and QZSS GNSS support.
What is included with the yearly tracking subscription?
The annual subscription covers the SIM card, alerts, software access and operating costs.
It also includes access to BlackOwl’s tracking platform and local support.
View our pricing page for current subscription and lease options.
Can I lease the Portable Small tracker instead of buying upfront?
Yes. The Portable Small tracker is also available through our business lease option.
This gives eligible businesses a no upfront hardware cost option, with hardware, SIM, alerts, software, operating costs, ongoing warranty, local support and future hardware upgrades included.
View our fleet tracking lease agreement for more detail.
Can I try the Portable Small tracker before buying?
