Keeping Brisbane dog parents connected with live GPS tracking
The K9 School Bus is a dedicated dog transport service operating across Brisbane’s northern suburbs, taking pups to and from The Wolfhouse dog day care five days a week. Owner and driver Ali makes the school run in Ted, a custom-fitted Farizon SV electric van, while live GPS tracking gives parents a simple way to follow the journey in real time.
The Challenge
From the beginning, one of the priorities for The K9 School Bus was giving dog parents greater visibility over their pup’s journey.
The idea for the business grew from a problem Ali knew first-hand. After regularly making the drive to Wolfhouse with her own dogs, she saw an opportunity to make the journey easier for other families while giving their pups a dedicated way to get to and from day care.
For many owners, putting their dog onto a school bus also means placing a lot of trust in the person behind the wheel. Being able to see where the bus is, follow the journey and confirm that it has arrived safely helps provide an extra level of reassurance.
The service needed a GPS solution that could provide that visibility without adding unnecessary complexity. It also needed to suit an electric vehicle, require minimal installation and make it easy to share the bus location with customers.
The Solution
With the service taking shape, The K9 School Bus needed a tracking setup that was simple to use day to day. After comparing a number of options, Ali contacted BlackOwl GPS looking for something straightforward, flexible and well suited to an electric van.
An OBD2 tracker was also discussed as an option, but the location and accessibility of Ted’s OBD2 port made a 12V setup the more practical fit.
BlackOwl supplied the BlackOwl Hardwired GPS Tracker paired with a 12V adapter, allowing the tracker to connect directly to Ted’s 12V socket without requiring a permanent installation.
The tracker can simply be plugged in when the school run begins and unplugged again at the end of the day. It provides the functionality of our hardwired GPS tracker while retaining the simple plug-in setup that suited the way the service operates.
Before committing, the tracker was trialled for several weeks to make sure it was the right fit for the daily school run.
The day before a pup is due to travel, their parent receives a unique tracking link. Once the tracker is powered on, that link gives them access to the live location of the bus throughout the journey.
Tracking links can be reused or configured to expire, giving The K9 School Bus flexibility over how and when live location access is shared with families.
The Results
Live GPS tracking has become an important part of the service. Parents can see when the bus is approaching, follow their pup’s journey to The Wolfhouse and see when the bus has arrived.
It has also reduced the need for manual updates while Ali is on the road. If traffic causes a delay, customers can simply check the tracking link rather than waiting for a phone call or text message.
For The K9 School Bus, that means greater visibility and reassurance for families while keeping the school run focused on the road and the dogs onboard.
A real-world example
On one recent pickup, the usual road had unexpectedly been closed, forcing the bus to stop at a different location.
Before a call was even needed, the customer had already checked the live tracking link, realised what had happened and driven to the new pickup point.
