GPS tracker FAQs

Find quick answers about choosing the right BlackOwl GPS tracker, setup options, accessories, tracking features and ongoing costs.

Choosing a tracker

Which GPS tracker should I choose?

The best tracker depends on what you are tracking and how you want it powered.

  • OBD2 is best for quick plug and play vehicle tracking.
  • Hardwired is best for discreet vehicle installs.
  • Portable Small is best for compact battery powered tracking.
  • Portable Large is best for longer life portable tracking and tougher asset use.

What is the easiest tracker to install?

The OBD2 GPS Tracker is usually the easiest vehicle option because it plugs into the OBD2 port and does not require professional installation.

Portable battery powered trackers are also simple to set up because they do not need to be connected to vehicle power.

When should I choose a hardwired tracker?

Choose the Hardwired GPS Tracker when you want a discreet, out of sight vehicle tracking setup.

It is a good fit for business vehicles, fleet tracking and situations where you do not want the tracker sitting in an obvious plug in location.

When should I choose an OBD2 tracker?

Choose the OBD2 GPS Tracker when you want quick installation, easy removal and the flexibility to move the tracker between compatible vehicles.

It is often a practical option for fleets that may need to swap trackers between vehicles over time.

When should I choose a portable GPS tracker?

Portable GPS trackers are best for assets, equipment, trailers, caravans and vehicles where wiring is not practical.

The Portable Small is compact and easy to mount, while the Portable Large offers a more robust option with longer battery capacity.

Can I track cars, utes, trucks, trailers and equipment?

Yes. BlackOwl GPS trackers can be used across cars, utes, vans, trucks, trailers, caravans, machinery and many types of business equipment.

The right tracker depends on whether the asset has vehicle power available, needs a hidden install or needs a portable battery powered setup.

Setup and accessories

Do any trackers need professional installation?

Only the Hardwired GPS Tracker normally requires professional installation.

The OBD2 tracker and portable battery powered trackers can usually be fitted in minutes without an auto electrician.

What accessories are available?

Accessory options depend on the tracker type selected.

  • OBD2 Extension Cable for the OBD2 GPS Tracker.
  • Hardwired OBD2 Adapter for supported hardwired setups.
  • Hardwired Cigarette Lighter Adapter for supported hardwired setups.

Accessories are shown on the relevant product pages and can be selected where applicable.

What does the OBD2 extension cable do?

The OBD2 extension cable lets you move the OBD2 tracker away from the vehicle's OBD2 port.

This can make the tracker less visible and may help with positioning in vehicles where the OBD2 port is exposed or awkwardly located.

Are the portable trackers weatherproof?

Yes. The Portable Small has an IP68 and IK06 rated housing, while the Portable Large has an IP68 and IK07 rated housing.

They are designed for rugged portable tracking use across assets, trailers and equipment.

What batteries do the portable trackers use?

The Portable Small is powered by 3 AAA batteries.

The Portable Large is powered by 3 AA batteries.

Battery life depends on the selected tracking mode, update settings, coverage and movement patterns.

Can I move a tracker between vehicles?

Yes, but some tracker types are better suited to this than others.

The OBD2 tracker is the easiest option to move between compatible vehicles. Portable trackers can also be moved between assets. A hardwired tracker is intended for a more permanent vehicle install.

Tracking and features

What tracking features are included?

BlackOwl trackers connect to our tracking platform, where you can view location, history, alerts and reports.

  • Map based tracking
  • Trip and stop history
  • Geofence alerts
  • Movement and tamper related alerts where supported
  • Reports and maintenance reminders
  • Mobile app and desktop access

Do all trackers include tracking history?

Yes. BlackOwl tracking includes 1 year of stored tracking history for active trackers on your account.

This allows you to review past trips, stops and activity from the tracking platform.

What happens if the tracker loses mobile coverage?

If a tracker moves outside mobile coverage, it can store GPS records internally.

Stored data is uploaded once the tracker reconnects to the network, subject to device power, coverage and normal operating conditions.

Do the trackers have tamper alerts?

Tamper related alerts depend on the tracker model and installation type.

The OBD2 tracker can support unplug alerts, hardwired trackers can support power related alerts, and portable models can support movement, tilt, impact or tamper related alerts depending on the setup.

How much do the trackers cost?

Current upfront tracker pricing starts from:

  • Hardwired GPS Tracker: from $250
  • OBD2 GPS Tracker: from $250
  • Portable Small GPS Tracker: $250
  • Portable Large GPS Tracker: $300

Optional accessories may increase the upfront hardware cost.

Is a subscription required?

Yes. Each active tracker requires a tracking subscription so it can send data to the BlackOwl platform and remain active on your account.

The subscription covers SIM data, platform access, tracking history, alerts, support and ongoing system operation.

Can I buy trackers upfront or lease them?

Yes. You can buy tracker hardware upfront, or eligible businesses can apply for a monthly lease option.

Buying upfront is a good fit when you want to own the hardware. Leasing can suit businesses that prefer no upfront hardware cost and predictable monthly tracking costs.
